Zarif pushes Syrian unity government ahead of Kerry meeting

The Levant News — Iranian Foreign Mohammad Javad Zarif reiterated his country’s plan for a national unity government in Syria during the Oslo Forum in Norway. Zarif said, “The solution [in Syria] is political and cannot be achieved through military means.” In addition to the unity government that could allow President Bashar al-Assad to stay in power, Iran’s four-point plan for Syria also includes an immediate cease-fire, constitutionally guaranteed minority rights and internationally supervised presidential elections. Zarif met this morning with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on the sidelines of the Oslo Forum and is also expected to meet his US counterpart, Secretary of State John Kerry, to discuss the implementation of the nuclear deal.
