Iraqi Sunni scholars disavow ISIL-supporting clerics

THE LEVANT – The Iraqi cabinet’s scholars committee on Wednesday (July 30th) disavowed clerics who support the “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL).

The group, a Sunni institution, decided to disavow clerics who support ISIL or keep silent over ISIL crimes and do not do their duty: warning people against joining it, said committee head Sheikh Khaled al-Mulla.

“ISIL elements and leaders are embracing a takfirist and exclusionist approach against all components and sects, and we thus disavow any clerics, tribal sheikhs, dignitaries or businesspeople who sympathise with them; they do not represent Sunnis in Iraq,” he said.
