THE LEVANT – During his appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher this past Friday, Ben Affleck slammed the host for his “gross” and “racist” views on Islam and spoke out against Islamaphobia in a heated debate about the religion.
Harris decried what he considered liberal hypocrisy when it came to criticizing Muslims and called Islam a “mother lode of bad ideas,” which did not sit well with Affleck.
In the heated debate, Sam Harris argues that 20% of the Muslim world are Muslims who “wake up wanting to kill apostates” and “force their religion on the rest of humanity” through the government.
There are an estimated more than 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. According to Harris, that would mean 300 million Muslims fall under this description.
When asked what he bases these claims on, Harris replies: “To give you one point of contact: 78% of British Muslims think that the Danish cartoonist should have been prosecuted. 78%. So, I’m being conservative when I roll this back to 20%.” Harris is referencing a British poll from 2006 in which 78% of British Muslims think that the Danish cartoonist should have been prosecuted for the twelve caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published in 2005.
Later in the interview, Maher backs up these claims, saying: “I can show you a Pew poll of Egyptians. They are not outliers in the Muslims world. It’s like 90% of them believe death is the appropriate response to leaving the religion.”
In fact, the poll he is referring to states that in both Egypt and Pakistan 64% hold this view, not 90%.
