EU announces $109M aid for Libya’s unity government

THE LEVANT NEWS — TUNIS: European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has announced a 100-million-euro aid ($109 million) package for Libya’s U.N.-supported unity government, a day after an attack killed at least 60 policemen in the Libyan town of Zliten.

In a joint press conference with Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj Friday in Tunis, Mogherini condemned the attack, saying the security issue “still represents the greatest challenge Libya faces.”

Sarraj stressed the need for “full coordination with the European Union to address terrorism.”

An ISIS affiliate in eastern Libya has claimed responsibility for Thursday’s suicide truck bomb attack in Zliten.

Libya slid into chaos after the toppling and killing of dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011 and is now torn between two rival governments, and a U.N.-supported unity government based in neighboring Tunisia.
